I actually owned this one for the Dreamcast, but I don’t really remember all that much about it. The only memories I have regarding this game is the fact that it was the first WWF game to feature Tazz in it, and that assigning Al Snow to help you meant that he could throw a fucking barrel at your opponent.

You can see that they played up the Royal part of the name in their first attempt at branding this PPV. I still think the purple and gold logo used throughout the 90’s was their best one.

Shortly after winning his second Royal Rumble, Hogan pulled “Old Glory” from the crowd and began to parade around the ring while his theme blared. This patriotic scene ended up being described perfectly on commentary by Gorilla Monsoon:

“Hulkster with Old Glory! AWWWRITTTTE!! ONLY IN AMERICA!!!”

It’s funny, I spent Saturday at the Alamo Dome in San Antonio to watch the UT vs OSU game which is coincidentally the same venue this PPV took place at. The overall attendance for this WWF event is STILL the highest attended Royal Rumble PPV on record as they ended up getting 60,525 people inside the stadium. The Alamo Bowl on Saturday had a little over 65,000 people in the crowd, so I can easily imagine what kind of electricity a crowd that size can whip up.

I’m pretty sure the pop I heard whenever UT got two sacks in a row to solidify their bowl win can equate to the pop heard whenever Shawn Michaels won his second WWF Championship over Sycho Sid.

I saved this one for last as it could very well be my favorite shot of a professional wrestler. It’s one thing to get a clear shot of The Undertaker during my favorite incarnation of the character but to make this wrestling icon, to make The Phenom pose in full attire inside of some run-down locker room shower is just too bizarre.

I also enjoyed reading his dislikes as I’ve heard from a couple of sources that he does not like people to talk to him whenever he’s lifting weights. The man owns a ranch nearby and used to frequent a gym in South Austin, and it was well-known amongst everyone there that you were to NEVER disturb the Undertaker when he was working out (which would usually take place during ungodly morning hours).

Mark Calaway just wants to be left alone, people! Stop staring at him and his hot-ass wife!!

I believe that this could very well be the first WWF PPV that I watched live as I was fascinated with the idea of the Inferno Match and completely enthralled with this feud between The Undertaker and his younger brother Kane. Taken a glance on Wikipeida at how this match came to be just brought a big smile to my face as I had forgotten some of the goofier parts of this setup:

“Paul Bearer challenged [The Undertaker] soon after [Wrestlemania] on Raw, to a match surrounded by fire where the loser would be determined by the first to be set on fire. The following week Kane and Bearer were shown at the graves of Undertaker’s parents, smashing the headstones and setting it ablaze. The week before [Unforgiven], Undertaker went to the crypt of his parents only to find their coffins gone; they reappeared in the arena under the auspices of Kane and Bearer, who then set one of them on fire and when Undertaker tried to stop them, Kane chokeslammed him into the other coffin.”
